What scupper plugs are the best?

Scupper plugs come in many sizes and designs which can lead to some confusion as to which ones are the best for your boat. We have researched nearly every design out there and tested most of them to understand how they perform when in use.

The best type of plug is obviously the one that seals tightly and stays in place. By design they will be specific to a certain hole size and best suited for a narrow application of uses. Our research has found that the one-size-fits-all plugs can be the most problematic in that they are designed to fit as many applications as possible and therefore are not specific any certain application. Most of these designs will feature a rapid taper from very large down to very small in the hopes of fitting as many holes as they can. This results in poor fitting plugs that leak and often fall out when in use.

Our research has found that a plug with a very slight taper will hold better which means less leaking and a more secure fit. These types of plugs can be pushed in further which leads to a better seal and therefore an even better installation.

Besides shape, material selection is just as important. Some materials will degrade in constant direct sunlight and begin to loose their strength and holding power. These lower grade materials can become brittle, crack and fail prematurely.

Kayak Scupper Plugs only selects premium plugs designed for very specific applications and we therefore stock many different sizes to be sure only the correct plug size is supplied with our kits. The plugs will have the important slightly tapered design and all materials meet industrial specifications. This makes them resistant to damaging UV-rays as well as chemicals and pollutants.

We only do one thing so we can focus on doing it better than anyone else. If there ever is a problem with your plugs, we have the ability to fine tune them to your exact needs and account for any variances in your particular kayak.
